Actor Yami Gautam, known for choosing roles that challenge conventional Bollywood norms, recently opened up about the disciplined approach she follows when selecting projects. From her performance as an intelligence officer in Uri to portraying a visually impaired woman in A Thursday, Gautam has steadily built a body of work defined by strong characters and content-driven narratives.
Speaking about her decision-making process, Yami explained that her priority lies in the script itself, not the stature of her role. “I always tell my producers and whenever I’m reading a script, I say, for me, it’s not important that I’m leading or I’m the protagonist of the film or I’m headlining a film… of course, the role is really important for me but the script is the hero,” she said and added, “I work, if the film works, if the script works, and that has been my bible ever since I realised what it is that has worked for me.”
Yami emphasized that she prefers to read scripts directly, rather than relying on verbal narrations. “In fact, reading a script, not taking narrations… I don’t take narrations, no matter what, I will never say yes to a film basis narration. That’s just the way my process is,” she added.
The actor also spoke about her way of staying focused while filming. She takes a practical step to limit distractions, especially digital ones, during a shoot. According to Yami, she uninstalls non-essential apps from her phone during shoots to stay mentally invested in her character and the story.
This approach appears to have helped her stay consistent in her choices, often opting for content-first projects instead of following standard industry trends. While not always headlining big-budget productions, her filmography includes several critically acknowledged roles that reflect a clear pattern of decision-making based on storytelling strength.
By making deliberate choices and sticking to a process that works for her, Gautam wants to navigate the film industry on her own terms—balancing her preferences as an actor with the demands of modern filmmaking.
