16th Finance Commission submits 2026–31 report; PM Modi meets panel members


Prime Minister Narendra Modi met a delegation of the 16th Finance Commission members on Monday. The delegation was led by the Chairman of the Commission, Dr Arvind Panagariya.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Met a delegation of the 16th Finance Commission members led by Dr Arvind Panagariya, the Chairman of the Commission.”

Earlier in the day, the Dr Panagariya-led 16th Finance Commission submitted its report for the period 2026–31 to President Droupadi Murmu.

The 16th Finance Commission was constituted by the government on December 31, 2023, with Dr Panagariya, former Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, as Chairman. The Commission has four members and is supported by Secretary Ritvik Pandey, two Joint Secretaries and one Economic Adviser.

The report was originally due by October 31. The government later extended the Commission’s tenure by one month until November 30.

“Members of the 16th Finance Commission, led by its Chairman, Dr Arvind Panagariya, called on President Droupadi Murmu and submitted the Commission’s report for 2026-31,” the Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a post on X.

The recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission relate to the distribution of taxes between the Centre and the states for the five-year period beginning April 1, 2026.
